Lambchop - Magnificent Obsession
Deszö Ranki - Stravinsky: Tango
Lata Mageshkar - Bahon Mein Chale Aao
D'Angelo - Africa
Vetiver - Been So Long
Ivor Cutler - I Worn My Elbows
Central Malay Choir - Boomstraat
The Impressions - We're A Winner
This is a few songs I've been listening to lately. While there's not much of a thread running through them stylistically, each track contains some details which jump out, usually harmonically. These are, to me at least, the irregular extended phrasing in the Lambchop, the fudge in the Stravinsky, the minor/major shifting at the end of each section of the Bahon Mein Chale Aao (bit cheesy, but the film that goes along with the track is worth looking for). The D'Angelo is just so lazy-yet-tight there's more than a dash of what we'd pin on James Blake these days. Both Vetiver and the Ivor Cutler are a little droney, only a little. Boomstraat is just a bit odd - when the whole choir joins in you get the feeling that it was a surprise to the sound guy too. I love We're a Winner as an adaptation of Amen Brother, that they've managed to capture some of that drum sound - but made it less frenetic. And that's my 8 tracks. If I was allowed 9 and an epic I would have put in A Rainbow in Curved Air.

I used to make music. Now I make things: some of which help other people to make music.
