Punctuation. [spotify]*

Thanksgiving — Dead Deer and Other Animals.
Minutemen — Maybe Partying Will Help
Talking Heads — This Must Be The Place (Naïve Melody)
Bob James — Angela (Theme from 'Taxi')
Joan of Arc — Me and America (or) The United Colors of The Gap
Snoop Dogg & Pharrell Williams — Drop It Like It's Hot
Mount Eerie — Stone's Ode
The Dismemberment Plan — The Dismemberment Plan Gets Rich!

My original idea for this playlist was along the lines of 'bands that are famous for the wrong songs'. It was quite fun, not great. Then the Joan of Arc song shuffled into my ears. Unassuming, gentle, complex. It eases along in a pleasantly emotional way, ending with some superb strings. My memory of the song is always rosier because of the ending.

I think that it's important to design for the experience and the memory. You can drastically shift the memory of the experience with punctuation. A brass burst in the middle, a black metal explosion at the beginning, or a complete shift of tone in the end. If I've done this right, there are moments that will stick out in your mind, moments that drift by beautifully, and overall you will remember a fun half-hour.

There's also some brilliant and very interesting percussion on here. The simplest form of punctuation.

* It's also available as a playlist on ethertunes. Most of them are live versions, but that's good because I like interpretations and versioning almost as much as I like punctuation.

Works as a Producer at Mudlark, half of Playlist Club, does Interesting North, writes words on the internet, and is pretty surprised that he hasn't really included any hardcore in his playlist.
